The BLACK BOX:
The Black Box Battery Pack has been around in various incantations and upgrades for the past sixteen plus years and some of my original packs date back to the sixties with different "chemistries", which is battery terminology or slang for different types of batteries.
In those days we did use 12V car batteries, "the nine pound Graflex Bowling Ball", which progressed into finicky NiCads with the Honeywell Stobonars and imminent electrocution with the Eveready battery #497 commonly called the 510 Battery Pack of Death. I know. I almost got my self many times.
There are several thousand of my packs out there. My pack came about because I had another popular brand drop dead in the middle of a Wedding. After that, I built my own.
WITH THAT SAID:
I have no secrets. I am a one man company, I believe in simple, affordable, reliable, portable products and I work because I am semi-retired, it keeps me busy, and prevents boredom.
I spent time working with a paper and today I don't have to chase stories, sports or do weddings anymore. Retired, not retreaded, thats a phrase meaning "you are too old to hire".
Thus I can pick and choose now the subjects and projects I wish to work on both writing the story and the photos. And yes we do town hall photo "eat and chat", workshops in any state I am visiting if you guys put the party together. We talk about weddings, event photography and products and nothing gets held back. I do not charge for this, but I like good food, I said good, not expensive.
QUALITY MANTRA
No cheap junk in these things. I have enough contacts in the electronics fields that allow me to purchase quantity and quality to keep prices affordable and a high level of construction. Since I have the strongest warrantee in the business and the best price it behooves me to put quality stuff in. I hate comebacks. We rarely have one. Barstools have claimed the most.
We have no distributors, no large chains of retail stores. No sales teams, rallies, parties, or "win a trip" for sales excellence, no corporate meetings, no stocks, no options, no employees, no headaches.
I am limited by the amount I can build. they are all by my hand and a little help from a CNC machine and great vendors. I have no advertising budget, my sales come from word of mouth and people like what I make so they tell their friends.
You are dealing with a fellow photographer who kind of learned from shooting what works and what's really ridiculous. And I can be reached by phone most of the time. I prefer the weekdays allowing some time on the weekends to spend with life doing what photographers like to do. Taking pictures for stories. Basically, sports, politics, community events. It's exciting work usually lasting about a minute after standing around all day for six hours waiting for a shot. Many of you know the drill.
NO GIMMICKS:
The Black Boxes and Tuxedos work exceptionally well with regular on-camera flashes like a most Canons or Nikons and they are really a gas on Vivitar 283/285/285HV's whether on the camera, a bracket, or in a dual setup for a light stand which is big now.
We have pros in the field who have captured 1500 images doing variable flash fill for outdoors sports and serve well with remote Canon and Nikon strobes where you want your recycle times as fast as the mains and for the popular three light portable setups. In fact one of our shooters just did 4000 shots at the Oscars.
2010 BLACK BOX: STANDARD FEATURES:
It is hand built, all hand soldered and sealed with RoHS certified wiring making it compatible for overseas; using HD DIN connectors instead of RCA jacks; a 21 watt commercial fireproof battery and heavy duty switches. Oversize clips and hangers for the shoulder strap are mounted with 3000 lb stressed rivets with backing plates. The Ultra Clip is standard. It cost sixteen times what a cheap spring clip costs.

PROFILE: I BUILD FOR,
SERIOUS WEDDING photographers, the ever popular Paparazzi, Photo-Journalists, Event, Sports, and Model shooters. Serious amateurs looking to step up as he or she's figured out the packs that some of the other manufacturer sell are quite more EXPENSIVE.
My units average over 1000-1400 shots. Why such as spread? Just so you know, flashes even the same makes and models may be different.
A lot depends on the condition, usage, how often, over-heated, age of the flash, distance you are shooting at, bounce gadgets, diffusion and that’s what effects the real numbers. Anyone tell you different, well, you know what to do.
Generally my packs produce more raw power, more than I or any other disciplined EXPERIENCED shooter will use in most wedding scenarios.
POINTS OF LIGHT...TACTICS:
The Black Box is just that, a stealthy black box filled with more power than the average shooter can shoot in a long session. No battery or financially draining complex electronics or extras. We use one really big reliable quality brand heavy duty battery. Thats why we are doing business with forensic labs though most of the objects they shoot are inert or well into rigor-mortis but in forensics they can be on scene for a long time. They are on-site sometimes for half a day. Since we do not use any type of acceleration or secondary capacitors which must be fed, the box is not eating it's own fuel. Long on-scene times are handled easily by the Black Box.
WORLDWIDE SHIPPING:
Most important of all our products are all made from RoHS certified parts and acceptable for overseas shipping and use, and our prices are better! Lots better. We now have chargers for shipments to the U.K. most Euro countries, and Australia, New Zealand and other worldly locations that have to be RoHS registered for overseas shipment and work on most Euro systems.
GENERAL BUILD SPECIFICATIONS:
BUILD: 100% all hand soldered AND SEALED using RoHS Certified appliance grade wiring. 3000 lb. stressed rivets with Backing Plates and a super tough case made in DENMARK. Reports from the field indicate the Denmark case survives the four foot bar-stool test. It may crack but it keeps on ticking!
POWER: Sealed lead Acid. 21 FULL WATTS, highest in it's class. Our batteries are pro-rated five years. Batteries are covered under the warrantee for one year and pro-rated for five years if kept on the charger. 6.4 Volts at peak. Also our batteries are fireproof.
WEIGHT: Box and battery about 2.7 LBS

SIZE: 4" x 6" x 2"STANDARD and all the cuts are custom cut on a CnC machine for a perfect fit. This assures when a component needs change the new part fits just as well.
SHOULDER RINGS: Standard Dual Zytel 3/16 "D "rings with HD 3/16" Clamps and Heavy Duty Steel 1/8 rivets with backing plates front and rear. No one else does this. They used stamp rivets which are cheaper and not as strong.

CAPS: Twin Red safety Caps for Airline travel protection. Similar to those used on airline parts. Protection for the pins when not being used and even though our batteries (Sealed Lead Acid) meets all airline requirements for travel, we still furnish these caps to expedite your camera through the TSA bag search.
PORTS: Twin DIN Type Heavy Duty Ports - STANDARD - They come with the Red POLY Caps shown above for the DIN plugs. These are heavy duty, Taiwan or Japan, not knockoffs from China, which are far cheaper and of dubious quality. We use the best available. We have yet to have one fail.

CLIP.COM: Industry Recognized finest Heavy Duty Ultra Clip or 764 by THE CLIP.COM Brand. Better than anything else on the market, these are designed, engineered and far superior to those cheap metal spring clips you see on the 600.00 dollars battery packs. Best clips on the planet. the clones out there are not rated the same.
THE CLIP locks in place and rotates so it will not fall off your belt. Even when you sit down and get up. No spring clip to loosen and throw the pack on the floor. READ: To remove the clip from the BLACK BOX or Tuxedo rotate the clip to horizontal and press the lever at the top.
NOTE: It seems some folks don't read, even a Caveman can do. Well Cro-Magnons can, we are still training the Neanderthals. The clip will break the stud if you try Neanderthal methods of removal. It is designed to break rather than destroy the box. So the clip must be HORIZONTAL, then push the release.
CHARGER: Heavy Duty INTERNATIONAL Dual Stage charger allows maximum five hour charge and second stage in standby mode keeps battery at 100% capacity at 100% of the time. 110-240 50-60 MGRTZ. Simple rules…If it’s not busy shooting it should be on the charger. This is what allows the unit to last five to seven years. When off the charger, unplug the charger from the wall.
CABLES:
You can use most "M" Quantum cables: You can make all of your cables but I caution against it. Please see the page entitled Flash Cables on your left. There are also sections on Nikon and CANON cables as these are the best sellers.
PREVIOUS OWNERS:
Upgrades available on all older Black boxes regardless of the year. We'll take it completely apart, rebuild it with the 2010 schematic. Replace any worn parts, test the battery upgrade it, if needed, for a slight additional cost and that includes reseating the clips and hangers, test the charger and basically make it as good as new. Call for pricing and time frame, usually one day turnaround.
