NEW GEAR, PROTOTYPES and BRAIN -FARTS

PORTABLE POWER SOURCES FOR ON-SITE

TESTING - NOT FOR SALE YET
Ok, this is not as complex a unit, as you might think.  A 1000 watt modified sine wave inverter, a large battery and built in charger all in one package that can either start your car or run your studio lights on location.

Voila!  This simple unit I built for flash on locations and as an emergency power supply for my cell phone, weather radio and S&R emergency radios since my home is in Florida, also known as "Home of the Hurricanes". Any mistaking for the Miami team is at your risk.

This unit will run either studio AC lights or DC Canon, Vivitar, Nikon portables. It's really two systems in one.

As the project develops we will keep you abreast of availability, with parts and pricing.  There are commercial units on the market but we felt they were underpowered and not really for the substantial shoot.

Thats why they have them with Chinese copied Quantum Turbos that sell for under 200 and the big boys with pro gear sell their units for 1700 dollars.  You will get what you pay for and the one that came with my studio lights failed three times and ADORAMA got them back.

The other side has the control panel and jacks for the LED and or Halogen lights which is very secretive at this time and If I showed it to you, I would have to shoot you.  About another month and we will be into testing the unit live and so far the most expensive part may be the battery.

YUNG-NUO STROBISTO MANIFISTO PROFESSIONALIE

We were testing the YUNG-NUO flashes. Known in China as Mr. Flash, YUNG-NUO electronics have more product changes than Lady GAGA had costume changes at the Emmy Awards.  This version of the flash of the month as tested was the 460-II claiming a small percentage  increase in power over the original 460.

In this case much research  came about as the hot wired Strobisto Testerobics went GAGA over it.

They were having a field day with it with scads of written data in this low priced and semi-efficient class of strobe.

BOTTOM LINE

There were tons of math and compilations, comparing it to the LumoPro, checking flash duration and median power at all settings.  I don't think the first A bomb had this much ado about nothing. I am more pragmatic about this so we'll kill the "impress the other guy with my make believe science, and we'll talk about brass and balls".

THE TRUTH
It is what it is, a Chinese answer to the table top and small portrait photographers needs.  For the enthusiast its fine.  For the working PRO, heavier options are needed to overcome the obvious loss of power in most softened and larger classic scenes.

This is a small class strobe, totally manual and combined with Chinese reliability, what you get is what you pay for.  This guy works for now and may be better suited for the Strobists culture as it has many of the features they use.

The most important thing to all those learning lighting (Strobisto Nubbio) seems to be a Teddy Bear, a Duck with wheels and on occasion, one of their kids.  They seem to be into taking pictures either on a table top and many times of their own gear and inventions. They have a need for lots of power settings, almost a mantra.   Did they ever think moving a low powered strobe two feet gives you another stop?

Regardless for the price, and experimenting purposes, it's a good deal. You won't go broke if the flash goes broke.  I will not get into Chinese Electronic Photographic Profiling.  You know my opinion of their quality control.

You can't beat it for the price.  Reminder, if you still think that an F-stop is a station you get on the bus or train with, this isn't for you.  Remember, It's totally manual, and will not talk to your Nikon or Canon for "ttl" . It has no external or AC power ports. I'm not talking about PC, 1/8 or other ports, but It comes with a built in receiver for wireless.

For power with the Black Box, we were able to attach leads since the contacts were not stainless and we devised a simple solution. Hard solder leads and make a port and since I have over a thousand RCA Quantum locking jacks we used them.  My supply went from 2125 to 2124 on hand.

OK KIDDING ASIDE
This is a nice inexpensive little strobe and great for tabletop and small portrait photography. It works fine with the black box and you could see 2000 or better flashes on one Black Box charge using the 7 step variable power setting. I sent it to a customer in Tasmania and he'll put it into actual use.
